Washington keeps worried eye on run-up to election but anti-American feelings aren't an issue Down Under.

Australians enjoy their splendid isolation, but a federal election campaign has put their country under an unprecedented spotlight.

Washington is watching apprehensively to see whether the war on terror will claim Prime Minister John Howard as another casualty in next month's vote. Howard, who publicly describes himself as America's "Deputy Sheriff, " put his political future on the line by deploying combat troops to the battle for Baghdad last year.
