The independent observer sent to the trial
of Australian David Hicks in Guantanamo
Bay has issued a damning report saying he does not believe the
US military commission can deliver a fair trial.
The report released
by lawyer Lex Lasry, who travelled to
Cuba for the initial hearing in the Hicks
case, found the process is not independent.
He says what he saw gave him no confidence
in the independence of the commission. "I don't think he can
get a fair trial in this system," he
said. He says the rules that apply to civil
and military courts do not apply.
