Transport Minister John Anderson says a bomb threat is the reason a United Airlines 747 turned back to Sydney airport 90 minutes after taking off.

Mr Anderson says he understands the threat was contained in a note found on board the plane. "It was some words that implied that there might have been a bomb on board," he said.
