At least 24 Haitian migrants have died and 20 have been injured in neighbouring Dominican Republic.

Some said they were thrown off the lorry they were travelling in when the police discovered them and opened fire on the vehicle to force it to stop.

But other reports said the victims had suffocated to death in the lorry which was carrying some 60 illegal migrants.
