Planned job cuts by U.S. employers topped the 1-million mark for the fourth time in as many years in 2004, as companies pared payrolls by more than 100,000 positions in December, outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. said Wednesday.
In the final month of the year, planned layoffs by U.S. employers totalled 109,045, the second biggest monthly reduction in 2004. In January, companies announced plans to slash 117,556 jobs.
