The investigation of an apparent plot to overthrow President Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea took a new twist on Friday, when London’s Independent newspaper reported that the South African state prosecutor’s office had obtained a list identifying the failed coup’s financial backers. The document, which has been referred to in the media as the “Wonga List”, is said to have been turned over to the South African authorities by James Kershaw, a computer expert and aide to Simon Mann, currently on trial in Harare, Zimbabwe, for leading a group of mercenaries that was to carry out the coup.
